Above the music
Lyricists are very articulate when writing words that is intended to accompany a musical composition. Poetry follows a meter in the same manner but does not feel the same.
Consider using real instruments when you do decide to record some of your work. The difference will be worth the trouble of organizing a session.
What chords are best for developing a melody?
A. I usually start with basic 1-4-5 chords because the structure is major and then develope the minor sounds after that.
Don't underestimate the importance of learning all the different keys. Especially if you are writing for someone else to do the vocals. Transposing the signature key is just a matter of shifting intervals. The notes played in the key have the same interval relationship to all other keys. The scales are the only variable that will make them different. Explore keys by playing the scales in all of them. Become familiar with the Major and Minor relatives of each key
Beginning November 8th The Wild Whisk will be hosting a Songwriter Sunday on the second Sunday of each month. The rules will remain for the most part consistent with the venue that has grown nationally while being rooted locally. Fort Madison has a number of venues that showcase local talent. Every Wednesday at 8PM the Hillside Inn runs an open mic for performances. I'ts probably the best in town for free entertainment with a variety styles. Unlike the Songwriter Sunday you do not have to perform originals, but you often get a taste of that as well. Laura Townsley and her daughter Emily eM&Me will host the Songwriter Sunday's at The Wild Whisk, and want the rules relaxed so that instrumental performances will also be considered song writing. You will also be allowed to run pre-recorded back up tracks, to fill as long as they are original and the performer is either playing or singing along with the tracks. Remember, you do not need to bring anything but your instruments. There will be appetizers sold but you must bring your own beverages.

New song of the week. I think I'll call it "The Gun"
